How to Wash & Care for Your Cotton Zip Up Hoodie
Did you know cotton fabric is incredibly versatile? It's easy to care for and it can be worn in any season. Cotton is used for all types of clothing, including shirts, pants, dresses, socks and under garments, and you guessed it, the tech billionaire’s chosen garment--the cotton zip up hoodie. The most important thing to remember when caring for your cotton zip up hoodie is it needs a little extra love when washing and drying. In this article, we'll cover how to wash and care for your favorite cotton zip up hoodie so you can wear it every day of the week!
1. Wear it!
Wear your zip up hoodie as many times as you can stand it. Most people wear a shirt under their hoodie, which prevents body odor and skin from coming into contact with the fabric and therefore more time to wear the hoodie in between laundry loads. Make sure to hang it up after use to prevent it from getting wrinkled and dirty on the floor
2. Wash your zip up hoodie in cold water to prevent shrinkage
Washing with cold water will help your cotton zip up hoodie to not shrink or fade and ruin the fabric. If you really want to go the extra mile, try placing the hoodie in a lingerie bag when you’re washing with other articles of clothing. For those of you (ahem, men) who don’t know, a lingerie bag is specifically used to wash delicate fabrics in a washing machine by placing a mesh barrier between them and rough surfaces in the load. As an alternative method, some recommend turning the hoodie inside out while zipped up to have the same effect.
3. Use a mild color preserving detergent that is free of bleach
This seems obvious but many detergents can be quite harsh on fabrics. There is nothing more annoying than having a black or dark colored hoodie fade. Look for the right detergent to do the job and keep your hoodie colors vivid.
3. Hang your hoodie up - never put it in the dryer!
You don’t want to use a dryer because it will cause your zip up hoodie to lose its color over time and there’s a very good chance it can shrink. Hanging your hoodie reduces overall wear and tear!
4. To get rid of lingering odors, hang your hoodie outside for an hour or two on a sunny day
Sunlight will remove all scents and odors. It will rid your hoodie from the smell of mold, mildew, smoke, food smells, fragrance, musty smells, and will return your hoodie its original neutral smell. Most unpleasant odors are caused by bacteria. Sometimes bacteria resides in your cotton zip hoodie even after doing laundry, causing mold, mildew or gross smells. Sunlight’s Ultraviolet rays kill the bacteria by destroying germ DNA. Just don’t let it bake for too long because sunlight will also make those colors fade!
5. Store your cotton zip up hoodie so that you can wear it again soon!
If possible, store your hoodie in a cool, dry, dark place (also known as a closet). If you’re a hoodie snob, you can even use a garment bag, but that might be taking your hoodie care too far.
6. Love your cotton zip hoodie more than ever before!
Let’s be honest. Hoodies are the next best thing to pajamas when it comes to wearable comfort. Show your hoodies the love they deserve and treat them right and in return they will last a long time and keep you comfy, warm and looking good.
